Tips For Last-Minute Guests
No matter how full your social calendar gets, there's always room for the unexpected. Follow these tips and you'll be ready for any occasion.
Keep a secret stash of wine. Stock a dozen bottles to serve impromptu guests:
- Four bottles of bubbly
- Two bottles of white
- Six bottles of red
Other beverages to keep on hand:
- Two or three bottles of sparkling table water (Perrier or San Pelegrino)
- Diet and regular soft drinks (including at least one caffeine-free choice)
Offer easy gourmet bites. Every grocery store carries a selection of prepared gourmet appetizers, from pastry puffs to crab cakes and other delights. You can pop them in the oven at a moment's notice. Their warmth and welcome aroma will make your guests feel right at home when they arrive.
Scent the scene with candles. Pick up scented candles on your next shopping trip. Light them before your guests arrive to set the mood and freshen the air. Our favorite fragrances: Brazilian Mango Grapefruit and Vanilla Vera Cruz by Pacifica Candles. www.pacificacandles.com
Create an instant powder room. Keep a fresh bar of scented soap wrapped in a pretty hand towel in your linen closet. Set them out in your bathroom before your guests arrive to create the impression you've been expecting them. Don't forget to stash away personal items like toothbrushes and medicines.
Clear the decks. No matter how clean your place is, it will appear even cleaner if the counters, tables and floors are bare. Round up all the clutter you can, focusing on the rooms where you'll entertain your guests. You can wait until they're gone to put everything in its proper place.
