Creating An Autumn Picnic

This fall, go out for lunch. Outside that is. Revel in that window of warmth that the sun brings on otherwise crisp days. Sip a glass of wine, savor some snacks and soak up every minute of a superb autumn afternoon. All you need is a full picnic basket, a blanket and a little music and you'll be set.

Location, location
From local parks to hidden hiking paths, there are lots of places to have a picnic. Or consider picnicking during a concerts or theater in the park. Check your local paper or the internet for free outdoor events in your area. Don’t forget to make sure food and alcoholic beverages are permitted where ever you decide to go.

Setting the scene
Even in a public setting, there are ways to make it feel personal. Start by setting the stage with brightly colored blankets arranged in a large square. Then add a few throw pillows for a stylish and decadent touch. And finally, to look great and be eco-friendly skip the plastic cups and pack real stemware for the occasion. Wrapping your glasses in cloth towels will go a long way toward preventing breakage. Or better yet, invest in a set of shatterproof wine glasses.

Open-air dining
Cheeses, crudités and dip, olives and fresh fruit are all easy to transport, and pair well with our Carneros Chardonnay or Blanc de Noirs. For an elegant twist on picnic fare, condsider a themed lunch: La Dolce Vita with fresh mozzarella sandwiches on pesto-topped foccacia and melon wrapped with prosciutto. Or go French with baguettes filled with thinly sliced ham, Gruyere cheese and Dijon mustard with cornichons and gourmet chips.
